So You Want to be a RETAIL Dietitian: A Webinar for Students, Interns & Transitioning RDNs

The retail grocery setting provides a unique opportunity to impact consumer food choices directly at the point-of-purchase, and retailers across North America are hiring registered dietitians to provide services and programs for shoppers. This webinar is designed to provide dietetic students, interns and transitioning RDs with an overview of the dietitians’ role in the retail setting and skills and experience needed to get hired into retail. A panel of three retail dietitians will provide insight on the role and advice to students interested in pursuing career opportunities with grocery chains. This webinar will be moderated by Amy Peick, a senior in the dietetics program at North Dakota State University.

Amy Peick - Aspiring Retail Dietitian

A senior, graduating from the dietetics program at North Dakota State University in May 2016. Have experience giving store tours from a grant from the Produce for Better Health as well as served as the dietetic student organization President at NDSU for 2015. Originally from St. Paul, MN and seeking opportunities to expand her knowledge and experience in retail dietetics. Currently doing an 8-week internship with Hy-Vee in the Twin Cities.

Elisabeth D'Alto - RD LDN, Retail Dietitian at ShopRite of Timonium

As the Retail Dietitian for the ShopRite of Timonium, Elisabeth D’Alto, RD LDN works with customers to educate them on making healthier choices while food shopping, as well as carrying out these choices by preparing healthy balanced meals. At ShopRite, Liz carries out a series of nutrition education classes, offers delicious recipes, holds seminars on pantry makeovers, and even conducts tours for shoppers looking to improve their health.

Liz received her Bachelor’s of Science degree from Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ. She then completed her dietetic internship at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Liz specializes in weight management, gluten-free foods, and heart health. She is an active member of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics and is the 2015-16 Supermarket/Retail Subgroup Chair of the Food and Culinary Professionals dietetics practice group. Liz is also a 2015-16 member of the Maryland Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Inaugural State Media Representative team.

As part of ShopRite’s Retail Dietitian team, Elisabeth D’Alto is one of more than one hundred Registered Dietitians who service ShopRite stores in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware and Maryland. Together these Dietitians offer nutrition advice, meal planning, and diet modification for specific medical conditions. 

Alyson Fendrick - RD, LD, CPT

Alyson is the Corporate Dietitian for HAC Retail based in Oklahoma City. Launching her Alyson Approved brand in 2012, she is known locally for her media campaigns including television, radio, social media and print. You can see her weekly on KOKH FOX news. Alyson promotes health and wellness to customers, associates, and the community.

Alyson is actively involved in the community promoting HAC’s health and wellness message across the state. She is the current Dietitian for the Oklahoma City Thunder Fit Clinics promoting nutrition and fitness as part of NBA Cares.

Alyson has developed a corporate wellness program for HAC Retail and partners with other local corporations to provide nutrition counseling and education to their employees. She launched her own 16 week weight loss challenge significantly improving the health of customers, with combined weight loss totals of over 600 lbs!

Prior to working for HAC, Alyson was the Supervisor of Food and Nutrition for Norman Regional Health Systems as well as a Clinical Dietitian. Alyson is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, including the Food and Culinary Professionals DPG. She is well respected as a supermarket dietitian receiving the Supermarket Dietitian of the Year Award from Produce for Better Health Foundation. She is also recognized as a leader in our state, receiving the Oklahoma Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Emerging Dietetic Leader award in 2015. Additionally she was recognized by her peers as the Distinguished Dietitian of the year in 2014 by the Oklahoma City District Dietetic Association. Alyson has a B.S. degree in Dietetics from Iowa State University.

Maili Huck - RDN, LD, H-E-B Registered Dietitian, Houston, Texas

As an in-store nutritionist for H-E-B’s Bunker Hill Market in Houston, Texas, Maili Huck, RDN, LD works with customers to show them better for you options and help navigate the aisles of the grocery store to make more healthful decisions on a daily basis. Some of the services that H-E-B Registered Dietitians offer include one-on-one nutrition consultations, group and individual store tours, adult and kids cooking and nutrition classes, and disease management classes. Maili is one of nine dietitians for H-E-B that cover six regions in Texas.

Maili received her Bachelors in Food Science and Human Nutrition- Dietetics and Sports Nutrition Tracks from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Honolulu, Hawaii in 2014. She completed her dietetic internship with eight other interns at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas in June of 2015. Maili’s interest in the retail setting first sparked during her internship rotation at H-E-B Grocery Company. During this time, she was introduced to H-E-B’s annual Slimdown Showdown competition, a highly extensive weight loss and overall wellness program led by the H-E-B regional dietitians. The overall concept of the program and dedication of the dietitians to the health of the company and the community was exciting and inspiring, and in June of 2015 Maili was fortunate enough to become a part of the H-E-B Registered Dietitian team.
