Please describe your role at Fresh Thyme. How has it changed since the pandemic?
As Fresh Thyme Market’s Corporate Registered Dietitian, Spokesperson and Health and Wellness Strategy Manager I wear many hats as most retail dietitians do. I oversee nutrition education and communication that provides our customers with healthy solutions to meet them wherever they are on their health and wellness journey. Since the pandemic, I began utilizing a variety of digital platforms to communicate nutrition education such as email, social media and tradition media like TV segments and radio segments. I also began our public relations to ensure that Fresh Thyme Market continues to communicate to our communities what we are doing internally and externally to better serve our communities and become their local neighborhood grocery store.

What's the story behind your experience in retail and how you came to work at your retailer?
I have always been a registered dietitian who enjoys non-traditional roles. When I saw the opening for a RD at Fresh Thyme Market five years ago, I was immediately drawn to the opportunity as the role oversaw a variety of different nutrition initiatives. I liked the flexibility of the role and being able to work on new and different projects each day as well as the ability to learn a new skillset as I would be reporting into the marketing department.

What has been the biggest challenge for you as a dietitian working in the retail industry?
I think my biggest challenge in the retail industry has been navigating the pandemic and pivoting nutrition education messaging to a digital platform. It was a big shift to move from in-store cooking demos and nutrition education classes to hosting virtual cooking classes, creating culinary demos and nutritional content to be executed on social media platforms. 

What is one thing you wish you had known before starting your career in retail?
Prior to working in retail as a registered dietitian, I was not aware that such a role existed. I think that had I known about this area of dietetics, I would have sought out a retail role earlier in my career.

Has there been anything specific that has held you back?  
My retailer is incredibly supportive of my role. I have had the privilege to work with many departments on a variety of initiatives and felt empowered to take initiative to create programs and build health and wellness strategies to help our customers live healthier lives.

In a similar vein, has there been anything specific that help you moved forward in your role?
I think that being open to learning a new skillset and to taking on additional responsibilities has helped me to grow as a dietitian, grow professional as well as allow me to expand my role and pursue additional opportunities within the organization.

Is there a program or initiative of which you are most proud?  
Fresh Thyme Market recognized that customers are making a shift towards a safer, more intentional, and sustainable lifestyle. Every day, Fresh Thyme works to be a trusted resource in our communities, providing real healthy solutions to help our customers live better and healthier lives. Over the past two years, I worked in partnership with our merchant team to help eliminate artificial preservatives, flavors, sweeteners, and artificially derived colors from our Fresh Thyme branded products. With this Free From standard, our customers can trust our labels and simply cut through conflicting, unreliable information to make their shopping experience more intuitive.

Bio: Meghan Sedivy RD, LDN is a Media Spokesperson, Corporate Registered Dietitian and Health and Wellness Strategy Manager for Fresh Thyme Market. In this role, she supports health and wellness programming, customizes educational experiences both on and off the camera and partners with key vendors and brands within the industry to help meet customers on their health and wellness journey. As a motivating, enthusiastic and passionate dietitian she has delivered over 100 media placements over the past 5 years including Fox 6 Real Milwaukee, Fox 2 St. Louis, Fox 8 Cleveland, Women’s Health Online, and NBC News Online. Earning a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition, at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois and completing her Dietetic Internship at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York she has over 13 years’ experience in the health and wellness field. Meghan has always been passionate about health and wellness, she believes that all foods fit and with proper nutrition communication messaging, she can help others create simple eating solutions to help them on their health and wellness journey.
