Progressive Grocer presented its first Outreach Innovation Awards at its Retail Dietitian Symposium on May 24th in Chicago. These awards honor health and wellness programs aimed at creating value for their customers, retail associates and banners. The winning programs included elements from store tours to sampling to website messaging to community outreach. The awards went to:

  • Mary Snell, MS, RD, Director of Health and Wellness at Marsh Supermarkets, was recognized for her Fresh Ideas for Education and Guiding Stars programs. Snell indicates, “By promoting Guiding Stars through a channel like Fresh Ideas for Education, we have been able to directly communicate information on healthier food choices to one of our main demographics – families.”
  • Alicia Jerome, MS, RDN, LDN Health and Wellness Manager for the United Family of Stores, accepted on behalf of her team for its Color Your Basket program). This program is unique, Alicia indicates, “because the concept spans all generations, all food preferences and lifestyles and easily includes every department in our stores.”
  • Alyson Fendrick, RD, LD, Corporate Dietitian for Homeland Stores, was honored for the Get Healthy Challenge. According to Alyson, “The most impactful thing about my program is that we are not only making lasting impacts on our contestants, but we are helping to build healthier communities in which they live.”  She continues, “we continue to hear about the success of our contestants following the program and see how they are sharing their new knowledge with friends and family.”
